Now that you have made the decision to begin a weight loss program, you want to set goals that will help you to lose the weight quickly! It is important to put your goal and plan in writing, so that you have something that will motivate you to follow each day.

It may seem silly at first, but will help you along the way as you encounter doubts and bad days. Business, large corporations, government institutions, all spend large amounts of times planning their strategies for a reason – planning works! Making a plan and setting goals is important so that you have accountability to measure your success. Start with the end goal in mind. Be specific about how much weight you want to lose, but make it realistic.

You could determine your goal in either pounds or in sizes. Include in your goal the main reason you want to lose weight. Do you want to look good? Feel better? Be able to accomplish an athletic goal? Or simply be able to more easily do athletic activities with your family. Whatever the goal, it needs to be on paper, posted in a place where you will be able to see it regularly (and yes, the fridge is a good place!) The goal should be both a deterrent to eating things that are bad for you, as well as an encouragement to exercise.

It may sound foolish but having your goal posted will help you to more easily accomplish it. Once you have a goal, you need to think about how you will reach it. Your plan should include both the way in which you will meet your goal as well as the time frame. An example might be that I will exercise five times a week for 20 minutes each time and I will eat a high protein, low carb diet. I will try this for one months. Make sure to include rewards that will not compromise your goal. Rewards could be set up to be awarded after certain time frames, or after certain amounts of weight are lost. For example, after you lose the first 10 lbs you could have one day off. Perhaps if you follow the plan for a month then you will buy yourself a sexy new outfit.

You need to give yourself a tangible reward, to encourage your continued persistence and success. Setting a goal and setting a plan to stick with it are the first and most important steps. The more time we take in doing this part, the easier the next part will be. What is next, you ask? Next, we need to look at how to maintain and measure our goals in the weight loss fight.
